Acute diverticulitis, perforation, peritonitis, pneumoperitoneum

CASE

In a patient with diverticulitis previously described on ultrasound, a CT was requested due to worsening clinical symptoms and serum markers of inflammation. The scans show inflammatory thickening of the sigmoid wall with multiple diverticula, locally trapped air bubbles and extensive stranding of the mesosigmoid fat indicating perforation with local peritonitis.
