Carcinoma of sigmoid colon, large bowel obstruction, ileus

CASE

The most prominent finding in this examination was massive dilation of the colon with air-fluid levels indicating bowel obstruction (ileus). Its cause can be tracked down to sigmoid, where a tumorous thickening of the wall with extension into the mesosigmoid and involvement of local lymph nodes can be found. Small bowel loops remain relatively undistended thanks to competence of the ileocecal valve.
